Do You Hear What I Hear
We all know people who give fake names at coffee shops. Some do it because their name is difficult to spell and they want to help the barista. Others do it to be silly. Still other times, the person listening gets the name wrong. This happened to us recently. After giving my order, the person behind the register asked my name. Jeff was standing behind me and thinking his name is much easier to spell than mine, I simply said, “Jeff.” A few minutes later, Jeff came to the table where I was sitting saying, “Natalie, we have a problem.” He handed me the receipt and I was expecting an overcharge. I could not contain my laughter when I read the name on the receipt.
DEATH
Yep, no lie. The name said DEATH.
This made me start thinking about listening. How well do I listen to God? Do I hear what he is actually saying to me through his word or do I hear what I want to hear? What about when others speak to me? Am I merely hearing or truly listening?
After much laughter, the employee brought out our food and began apologizing. He shared that he has dyslexia and thought I said Beth. OK, now I felt bad for laughing — but still, DEATH?
