Feeling Suicidal?

you are not aloneSUICIDE…one word…says so much…

S – Stigma

U – You are gone.

I – I will never be the same.

C – Completed…Over…No More…

I – Irreversible.

D – Death.

E – Eternity.

Ten minutes ago I sat with a friend who received a phone call that someone she cares about had just overdosed. Immediately the atmosphere in the room changed. A heaviness weighed down on all of us. Sadness permeated the room. Anger and irritation were poking their heads in on us as well. Even those of us who did not know her friend where impacted by the headiness of that one word. Suicide.

I understand that for many the pain is so overwhelming that they see no other out. I get that some people mistakenly believe that their loved ones are better off without them. Hogwash! When a person dies by suicide, they heap a mountain of pain and anguish on those left behind. Sure, life goes on…but it is never the same.

A friend wrote a book about losing her husband to suicide entitled, Shattered. This word also speaks volumes. For the survivors (those left behind) our worlds are shattered. Imagine the impact of a costly vase as it bounces off a concrete floor. This is what it feels like to lose someone to suicide.

The prized vase can be glued back together to create a beautiful mosaic, but the cracks remain. The wounds heal but there are scars.

I know this post is not your typical feel good post, but I am writing to those who are considering suicide. While your pain may threaten to consume you, there is hope. Suicide is not the solution. Seek godly counsel. Ask for medical help. Share with someone you love about your desperation. Ending your life doesn’t end your pain; it only transfers it to others. Do you really want others to feel what you are experiencing? Do you want the children you know to worry about who will be next? Is this the legacy you want to leave behind?

If you are considering suicide, please, I beg of you, call 1-800-273-8255 and someone will help you. If you won’t do this for yourself, do it for someone you love.
